Random Dump of Thoughts

Shower thoughts, half-formed ideas, and things I can't finish elsewhere.

A sewing needle threaded with red cotton rests on pale hospital-bed linen in early-morning light

An unopened ticket in a shopping cart beneath blank task cards on a dim desk

Sometimes I say I might go home over the weekend.

I had said I would let them know once I bought the ticket.

During work, the same question arrived anyway.

I have not bought it. There is nothing new to tell.

By the time I see it, it no longer feels like a question.

Before I buy the ticket, the weekend has already been assigned things to do. Something needs carrying. Someone needs a ride. A form needs signing. Even the dog has a seat.

None of it is a big deal. Put together, it becomes another weekend before I have arrived.

Maybe that is why the ticket stays in the cart. Once I pay, I am no longer just going home.

I am an extra pair of hands.

I once suggested something to someone. They said it wouldn’t work. I knew it would — not that I’m always right, I’m not, but this one I knew. Months later they told me the same idea, like it was brand new. I said it sounded worth trying. I didn’t mention we’d had this conversation before.

Last week the same scenario played out with a colleague of theirs. They watched, a little frustrated. “Someone should have told them.” Maybe they were right. Someone had, in fact, told them, months ago, about the same situation. I didn’t say that either.

I think the memory just doesn’t connect across positions. From inside the pit, advice sounds abstract. From the rim, it sounds obvious. The two views never meet in the same head at the same time, which might be why the pit keeps getting visitors. I try to be careful with the advice I give too, because I’ve been the one nodding without listening.

I didn’t know whether to blame my horoscope sign or my 八字, so I looked the 八字 up properly. I’m 辛丑日: 辛金, the jewelry metal — refined, sharp, keeps its distance. 丑 is wet earth, and its main qi is 偏印, the watcher. Hidden in the same branch is 癸水, my 食神, the part meant to relax and enjoy. The watcher sits on top of the enjoyer. The books call it 枭神夺食. I don’t fully understand the mechanics, but I understand that sentence.

It explains the two things I don’t usually say out loud: I can’t stand talking to people, and I’m lazy. Not rudeness. From the rim, most conversations are predictable. I know where they’re going, and the effort of walking someone through it, knowing they’ll only hear it once they’re in the pit themselves, doesn’t feel worth it. So I stay quiet, which reads as not caring. Maybe it is.

And lazy: why warn them? The pit teaches better than I do.

These days I don’t stop them. I just make sure the tool is within reach for when they climb out.

How Much Is My Life Worth

I went to buy insurance the other day. Got halfway through the form before I hit a question I couldn’t answer. How much is my life worth?

I just couldn’t produce a number. Every premium felt like overvaluing the asset, am I worth that much as someone’s son, brother, husband?

Sometimes a car speeds down the road and I think how easy it would be to just topple over and get my ‘watermelon’ squashed by the run over car.

My dad’s cancer claim burned through the policy, and after it was done the only option left was the general hospital. And hospitals charge more when you have insurance anyway. So the peace of mind runs out, and the bill doesn’t.

Then the loop: if I want to die, do I still buy insurance? Or is that the exact reason I should? So my wife doesn’t have to tanggung the after-life stuff.

I still haven’t bought it. Not because I’m invincible, or broke. I just can’t tell if the feeling is a fact or a symptom. Some days life is dull and there’s nothing to anticipate. Other days I look forward to the new tech stuff like a kid. I don’t know what’s causing the contradiction.

Envying Peers

Sometimes I think a normal life looks nice.

My peers take one trip a year. They visit one another during CNY. There is enough going on that they miss it when it is gone.

Sometimes I dream about going back to high school.

Sometimes I wonder why I took this path.

Every small decision leads to another one. I don’t regret mine. I am just curious what life looks like on the other branch.
